Thanks for this opportunity to get to know a little more about you and your app “Backspaces” . Having just started using it, I like what I see so far! So let’s take a more in-depth look at how Backspaces came to be…

1. what gave you the inspiration to build Backspaces?

Backspaces came from two things. The first was a simple mapping app that Dmitri made over a weekend. He would snap photos and the app would plot them on a map. At the time, I was thinking a lot about the problems with social media, and more importantly, the digital content that people create. I felt like there was a space for more breathing room on the web for people’s content. Narrative seemed like a good place to start. When I saw Dmitri’s app, I could see that this was it. In a dead simple way, you could quickly create and share your day with someone. That’s how it got started.

2. what were you doing before you created the app?

Dmitri and I were working on a different idea involving nonprofits that never really panned out. But it did give us time to learn to work together and now we have a great synergy.

3. approximately how many users are already on the app?

We have 50,000 users to date.

4. Why should someone who is using IG, look into your app?

We created Backspaces for storytellers - but also to prove that everyone has a story to tell. IG lets you quickly share something, and that’s cool, but when you want to really express a thought or reflect on some events or emotions you’ve captured, Backspaces can help you tell that story.

5. You seem to be very focused on reaching out to the community. What is your pledge to the user. How will you make sure you are giving us the best possible platform to use?

We really believe that community is everything. I tell everyone that we don’t have all the answers but that we can definitely find them with help from the community. The reality is that you can build a great business while still aligning your growth with the creators. YouTube has done a great job of this. Our pledge to users is this: your content, your value, your benefit. We’re determined to build a platform where everyone benefits.

6. what are some of the major differences with Backspaces compared to the slew of other photo sharing apps?

We are by and large a storytelling platform first, a photo sharing app second. We want to help people tell stories and we think photos and text is the very best way to do that.

7. What are some exciting things you are working on improving about your app?

SO MUCH STUFF! We’re working to make hashtags more community oriented, making it easier to create stories, lotsa bug fixes, updating the comments, playing with new formats for creation, updating our own filters, adding stuff for web (you can login to http://backspac.es to read, comment, like and search already!).

8. where do you see yourself as well as Backspaces heading in the coming year?

We’re going to be the place to tell the world’s stories. And we’re going to prove that everyone has great stories to tell.

9. Any last words you would like to tell the reader?

We’re just thrilled and honored to have people in our community. Sometimes you use an app and you feel so far away from the developers behind it and it feels soulless. We love making stories, and we love reading them everyday. Literally everyday we’re looking at stuff and amazed at the things people share. It has made the world feel like a smaller more connected place for me. So thank you to everyone who’s given it a go ;)

#unitedbyedit has retooled and is back in business!
1. Tell us a little about who you are, what would you like the world to know about you?

My name is Alain Vincent, and I post daily on Instagram. I would love to reach an audience as wide as possible. Every picture has a story to tell and I wish that when people look at my feed, that they view it as if each posting was a page of a book.

2. What are your favorite apps to use when editing? Why?

The only app I use is Procreate for Ipad because it gives me the freedom that I need as a painter to treat the photo as if it were a drawing or painting. For me, the frontier between photo, painting and drawing has become very blurred.

3. What is your favorite subject to shoot/edit?

Definitely the human subject whether in action or at rest… even when he/she is absent from my shoot. The presence of the human experience is fundamental to the work.

4. How has Instagram changed you?

The immediacy of the distribution and the feedback process is unparalled. It forces an artist to diversify and re-invent himself/herself constantly while maintaining a solid base or signature that gives identity to the work.

5. What advice can you give to someone who wants to “Explore” with editing their photos/art?

Work everyday and post everyday. The work will find its voice and direction.

#unitedbyedit 💢Daily Forum💢 This weeks forum...

#unitedbyedit 💢Daily Forum💢 This weeks forum is….”Pimp my Pic”!! 1. Tell us a little about who you...

An interview with @eastonroc

1. Tell us a little about who you are, what would you like the world to know about you?
I am a 30 yr old guy(as of yesterday) living in NJ with my wife and 2 1/2 yr old daughter. My wife and I own a wedding photography company called www.lureyphotography.com. Its amazing to be able to capture moments for people that they will have for the rest of their lives. I also went to college for jazz guitar/music performance. I love everything about being creative and exploring new ways to express that creativity through photography, music, art, etc.
2. What are your favorite apps to use when editing? Why?
Its hard to narrow down my favorite apps… As soon as i see a picture, whether its my own or one another iger sent me to collab with, i instantly have an idea of what i want it to look like. I have about 80 different apps i then go to to achieve the look i want. I would say that I use a few staple apps for just about every picture though. Snapseed -used mostly for making different masks of the same pic. Typically, i will make a drama mask, structure mask, sharpen mask, and a brightness mask. Then i will use Juxtaposer to overlay those masks by brushing them on the certain areas of the original photo in the places i want them. I also use Juxtaposer to add masked images to the my original. Superimpose would be another big one i use for just about every pic as well as filterstorm. I try to stay away from apps that degrade the quality of my pic.
3. what is your favorite subject to shoot/edit?
I love to create surreal images by combining certain parts of multiple images. So i guess i like shooting a bunch of random things and trying to make them work in one image to tell a story. For my base image i usually prefer a landscape shot or a plain white background i can build a picture around.
4. How has Instagram changed you?
Instagram has opened my eyes to and put me in touch with an incredible community of people that are extremely talented. It always has me on my toes eager to learn how someone achieved a certain look which pushes me to constantly grow and expand my own skills. I find myself checking my phone several times an hour which is probably a little much ha ha. But IG keeps me inspired to continue to create.
5. What advice can you give to someone who wants to “Explore” with editing their photos/art?
I would say that the best way to get into editing is too just jump in head first! If you find someones feed that has pics you really like, tell them! Ask them what apps they used and the process they went through. I have found so many people that are willing to tell me exactly how they achieved a certain look etc. My favorite way to learn is by collaborating with other igers to make one image. I actually just started a group called @collabsrus that is focused on connecting people with other igers specifically to collaborate. Each person tells the other what apps they used so everyone learns from each other. We have challenges where we post a raw image and then everyone has to pair up with another iger to collab and tag their images to #collabsrus. Then we select a winner. I would encourage everyone to check it out!

AN INTERVIEW WITH: Lynda@imageconjurer . I first discovered her...

AN INTERVIEW WITH: Lynda@imageconjurer . I first discovered her over a year and half ago. We have been long time followers of each others work. Her edits have always been a source of inspiration for me. I admire her tendency to view things in a way I never would imagine. I’m honored to, recently, call her a friend of mine. She’s a diamond in rough; and I wanted to take a moment to share her unique view on the world with all you in hopes you’ll be inspired the same as I am. Read on below to learn more about her. ⬇⬇ brought to you by Jen @puppywings
1. Tell us a little about who you are, what would you like the world to know about you?
My name is Lynda Martin and I am from the USA. I have always lived in Texas, mostly on the outskirts of small rural towns. I am passionate about art. When I turned 30, I decided to go back to school for a full immersion in art. I was in heaven. I took classes in many disciplines, but eventually decided to get my BFA in photography. This was in the early/mid 90’s before the program added digital photography so I have a darkroom background. I prefer my iPhone 4 and apps to my DSLR. I will confess that I am not a competent Photoshop user yet.

2. What are your favorite apps to use when editing? Why?
I use a lot of different apps so this is difficult to answer. I primarily use the native camera on my iPhone 4. I also frequently shoot with the cameras in Camera+, 6X6, and Hipstamatic. My edits usually start in Snapseed for cropping/straightening (if needed) and any adjustments in brightness, contrast, white balance, etc. At this point, I decide if I want to add filters, texture, or layer images. Depending on what I’m trying to accomplish I might use Iris, ScratchCam, or PicGrunger for texture. I like the filters in Iris, Camera+, Photo fx, and Snapseed. When I layer multiple photos I like Image Blender, but I also frequently use Juxtaposer and Superimpose depending on what I am working with. These are just a few of the apps I use regularly.

3. What is your favorite subject to shoot/edit?
Architectural details, landscapes, and textures are my favorites. I am drawn to places and things that are desolate, neglected, worn out, broken, abandoned, or struggling. I like to observe the way time changes everything including the way I see the world around me.
4. How has Instagram changed you?
My passion for making art had waned and many of my artist friends have moved away so I was lacking a creative community. I find that I am most inspired to create when I have other people to share my art with and when I can talk to others about their work. IG has given me a great community of artists and I have made real connections and friendships with some of the people I have met. I was recently in California where I got to spend time with some of my favorite IG friends. It was a joy to meet these friends after many months of seeing their photos/artwork. Then there are my local IG friends who are constant sources of inspiration and support. Last week one of my IG friends from the east coast came to visit for several days and it was amazing to spend time with her. I did not know any of these people when I joined IG. I would have never dreamed that this free app could provide me with the dynamic community and inspiration I need to start making art again. Every day I see excellent photos/art and talk with interesting talented people who inspire me. I am very grateful.

5. What advice can you give to someone who wants to “Explore” with editing their photos/art?
It helps me greatly if I know how I want a photo feel before I start the edit. When I am shooting I like to notice the emotions and thoughts that come up. I take all of that into consideration when I am editing the photo. I suggest folks think about what they are trying to convey and what will support the message. Once I know what I am trying to achieve then I know which apps to use. If I get stuck then I play around trying out different apps and settings to see what new things happen. Sometimes less is more in editing. Think about your intention and if it is really necessary to app the heck out of the image. Quiet images also have something to say.

APP REVIEW: PaintFX

Edit and review by: @the_mighty

Paintfx was literally the app I had been searching for and it has been used in every single picture I have made since. This app allows you to change whatever you want in a picture, make whatever adjustments you want to make, change colors, take away colors, add texture, go through three 3 different kinds of HDR, cartoonize or posterize, blur, and a number of other really cool filters, all of which can be adjusted with opacity. There is even halftone so you don’t need a whole other app to add that effect. Like Color Strokes, you can paint colors on black and white photos, or you can make photos colorless. But unlike the other app, you can add textures and filters in addition to colors. The enlargement capability is exceptional so you can make changes in very small places with great detail. Other apps offer a number of these things, but this is the only one I have found that allows you the ability to completely adjust each detail you want without applying a filter over the whole picture. You layer until you are satisfied with the results. I have not tried the free version, but I will say the paid version has been worth every penny and then some.

This picture is a combination of 2 tinyplanets blended together of a piece of sidewalk. I added eyes I had already colored with paintfx and from there most of the remaining changes were made with paintfx. All the colors changed and with a number of effects applied it started to look like 2 masks. Further adjustments to the picture gave it the appearance of metal.

App Review by @jflex

APP REVIEW: “Color Strokes”....

App Review by @jflex

APP REVIEW: “Color Strokes”. The official IG site: @colorstrokesrocks and tag: #colorstrokes … review below:

I have been a longtime user of another app MacPhun created: #fxphotostudio and as soon as I saw they released Color Strokes, I downloaded! REVIEW » I’ve used several other color editing apps like this, but none quite have the control and precision needed in a detailed edit like above. When loading up a photo from my camera roll, and after adjusting the crop, I get placed into a very simple and straight forward interface. At the bottom I can start editing my new B&W photo with either Nature Color, Grayscale, or ReColor; something the other apps I’ve used do not have. I selected Native color and went into some of the sky, sun and sunflowers. I also touched up the water reflection a bit. Then I began to play around in the ReColor portion. I fine tuned several shades of green and used a very soft and transparent brush and painted in some color detail in the grass. I also used the recolor effect to paint the sailboat. The end result is the edit you see above… Some really great features I loved seeing was the ability to fine tune your brush on the fly. Zooming in to pixel width gave me complete control over where I wanted to place my colors. the added zoom preview makes me wish I had the same function on my Photoshop; it’s that cool. There are other addons that make this app a great purchase; Dramatic effects such as “Dreamy” and “Hard Light” are a quick and easy way to add some drama to your edit. I could see really spending alot of time in this app on more of my edits going forward, and it will definitely be added to my top App arsenal collection. I really don’t have anything negative to say, Color Strokes does exactly what it says, and it does so in a matter that is easy quick, and effective to use. I highly recommend giving it a look!

I don’t remember how I met @jojomon5, but I like to think...

I don’t remember how I met @jojomon5, but I like to think it was some kind of “crowd sourcing ” energy that did it. If you follow me ( @jasor ), then you know I love a good community IGer. This is definitely one. I wrangled him up for a few minutes of his time, so read below to learn how cool he is:

1. My name is Joe Montoya, you keel my father, prepare to die- I’m a children’s pastor by day: unpublished writer at night (working on the published part) My wife on IG too shelleymon5 and I have a now adult son on IG but he won’t tell me his IG name. I surf in the OC California and Instagram to stay sane. I’m currently addicted to Uncrustables.

2. I’m big on Snapseed because of the ease of use to adjust lighting & saturation. Most of my vintage and B&W’s are done on Snapseed. The Grunge filters are fun too. My 2nd favorite editing app is Photoforge. I’ve never gone too deep into using it but I’ll use Photoforge for heavier editing or going abstract.

3. I’m always looking up at powerlines, trees, signs. I also like shooting beach elements and Hot Wheels. I use an iPhone 4 and currently shoot with Hipstamatic.

4. Instagram has transformed an on and off interest in photography into an everyday passion. After all these years, I finally have a hobby. My world is much bigger because of Instagram. I’ve met hundreds of people and made a number of friends.

5. Find a couple of editing apps. Follow IG’ers whose style you like. Ask questions. Some
IG’ers will explain their editing process. Focus on a few skills at a time. For example, right now I’m trying to master editing silhouttes. Also, join forums and participate in challenges. They are a lot of fun and, you grow!

Please welcome the newest member of the United By Edit team....

Please welcome the newest member of the United By Edit team. @wstairs … We look forward to seeing what you will add to the team!

An interview with @nellypop

Tell us a little about who you are,...

An interview with @nellypop

Tell us a little about who you are, what would you like the world to know about you?

Well let’s see… My name is Nelson I’m 39 years old and my friends call me Nelly Pop (don’t ask) I have a wonderful wife and son living in Orange, CT. Way to many pets, but they keep me warm HeHe. I’m in management, so not much artistic release. Well thanks to IG that’s changed.

What are your favorite apps to use when editing?

Well with 20 apps and counting I would have to say that some of my top apps are Camera+ Snapseed, Photo FX, iCameraHDR, Blender, PhotoStudio, PhotoWizard, Filterstorm. Let me stop there. I usually use 3 to 5 apps per edit. Depends on what look I’m going for. I don’t have a style per say, so I like to try different things.

What’s your favorite subject to shoot/edit?

I shoot anything as long as it has great color. I like to keep a lot of different images in my roll, so there is always plenty to pic from for both personal and challenge edits. Oh and my son. He loves it when I edit pictures with him. He always ask “dad how many likes did I get” LOL he’s great.

How has Instagram changed you?

Definitely gave me a way of letting my artistic side out on a daily bases. It’s great to have that ability in the palm of your hand. Also all the great iPhoneographers I have gotten to meet. Not only from the U.S. but around the world. It’s really is amazing. Thanks to their wonderful talents I have learned so much. Thank you guys 👽💙🙏✨

What advice can you give to someone who wants to “Explore” with editing their photo/art?

This is an amazing community and many are more than happy to help. Don’t be afraid to ask for tips or if you have any questions on techniques your trying to learn. There are no limits on what you can do. There is no right or wrong way. It’s all about what you like. Just let loose and enjoy. Also like and comment. It’s how you’ll grow relationship, don’t be a ghost. Don’t forget it’s not about the numbers.

An interview with @shibz2311

1. Tell us a little about who you...

An interview with @shibz2311

1. Tell us a little about who you are, what would you like the world to know about you?

Who I am?! Still trying to figure that one myself. Name is Leslie and I live in Melbourne Australia. Born and raised here. Only child but not spoil and I do live life to the fullest. Sounds corny but I’m not a person who likes to think about the “what ifs” - I tend to go with the flow and what I would like the world to know is that I’m real person who has their ups and downs but gets through it. Don’t be scared of the unknown.

2. What are your favorite apps to use when editing? Why?
My favourite app of all time (other than IG) has to be filterstorm. I use that app no matter what kind of photo of doing. Perhaps not the easiest app but once you get the hang of it, you can create anything. Also tend to either use snapseed or camera+ … Both simple to use and give the photos more of that WOW factor. If I’m doing B&W, I will use noir or hipstamatic which give photos contrast, depth and dramatic shadows & light which I like.

3. what is your favorite subject to shoot/edit?
My favourite subject… Depends on my mood. Sometimes I like streetphotography but I also love doing beach shots or micro flower shots. If I could truly capture the stars like NASA does, would be my fav subject 100%

4. How has Instagram changed you?
Where do I begin! I’ve always liked taking photos and my outlet was twitter or Facebook back in the day but no one really cares. When I discovered IG, the doors… My eyes opened to a new community who are truly passionate, supportive and creative about photography. IG has changed my life as its given me so many opportunities that I can’t even begin to list but I feel truly blessed and the people who I do follow are my family

5. What advice can you give to someone who wants to “Explore” with editing their photos/art?

GO FOR IT! Experiment, play around with apps, even the free ones. Just like learning how to walk, you gotta take those few steps. Don’t let anyone stop you or discourage you because IG is based upon how you create your world. If you go back through my IG stream, its a variety of everything because I’m always exploring myself, no one stops learning!
